This site is dedicated to our friend and neighbor, Richard Rowan, who was tragically struck and killed by a motorist while crossing Overland-trying to get home.

ROWAN, Richard William "Dick"

(62) Richard William Rowan, husband of 40 years, father of five, grandfather to six, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2003. He was killed by a motorist while crossing the street in front of his home in L.A. on Saturday afternoon.

He is survived by the love of his life, Carolyn and their children: Richard W. Rowan, Jr. of Santa Monica, California; Carrie and Robert Daigneault of Northboro, Massachusetts and their children Lily and Amelia; Melanie and Barry Landsberg of Santa Monica, California and their son Jake; Andrea and Jason Freidus of Houlton, Maine and their children AJ, Matty and Autumn.

Richard was the Director of Administration at the law firm of Greenberg Traurig, LLP where he worked for two and a half years. He spent the last 40 years working in the legal field for some of the most prestigious law firms in the cities he resided in. Dick's colleagues always complimented the high level of integrity and passion he put forth on any project he participated in. They describe him as a mentor, extended father figure, and a true role model.

He was born on September 13, 1941 in Sangerfield, New York. As a young man, he served his country in the Air Force. Dick raised his family in Massachusetts until 1990 when he and Carolyn moved to L.A. County. Dick's life was unconditionally dedicated to his family. Five years ago Dick underwent a kidney transplant to save the life of his first born, Teri Ann Foxtree. We sadly lost Teri to her struggle with diabetes in June of 2002. The newest loves of his life were the six grandchildren he felt so very blessed with. All under the age of five, they will unwittingly miss the wealth of love and wisdom Papa was sure to provide. A warm and compassionate man who would modestly underestimate the impact he had on other's lives will be sadly missed by all.

Richard William Rowan ("Dick")

How do you say goodbye to a man as great as he?
How do you make sense of such a tragedy?
He’d want us to remember the life he choose to live,
One so full of compassion and his generosity to give.

He’d want us to be uplifted by the warmth of every smile
And know that for a stranger he’d walk a country mile.
He taught us all respect and integrity it’s true,
To open up your heart when another is feeling blue.

His accomplishments were many but one he spoke most of,
The value of family and his bride, his one true love.
His newest role of Papa was one that made him grin,
He said he felt so blessed with the birth of six grandchildren.

Generosity and kindness were things that made him tick.
If you were in a bind you knew you could count on Dick!
There were no limits to his ability to make you feel ok
And this, my friends, will carry us forward from this day.

Husband, brother, Papa, father figure, mentor, Dad
We’ll all cherish the memories of the special relationships we had.
The imprint of his legacy lives every time we say,
I wonder what Dick Rowan would do and follow through that way.

It’s hard to imagine not looking into my father’s eyes,
But when a spirit so vibrant passes they never really die.
He gazes down upon us where angels circle high
To rest from this hectic world where time ceases to pass by.
